Department of Botany

The Department of Botany or Plant Sciences is one of the leading departments dedicated to teaching, research and introduction of new add –on courses since its inception in 1956. Over its breadth of development, Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and later Post Graduate program in Biotechnology and Biochemistry have been introduced by the department, primarily for those students who plan to pursue careers.

Objectives:

  • To promote students acquisition of basic knowledge of plant Sciences.

  • To promote awareness of the vibrancy and diversity of plant kingdom

  • To familiarize students with various plants and its botanical terms.

  • To make students learn the characteristics of common plant families

  • To teach plant identification skills

  • To instill an interest in investigating plants and their uses

  • To teach basic biological principles and specialized skills

  • To prepare students for professional career plant scientists and as teachers

  • To enhance their interest and ability to succeed in their Graduate /Post graduate programs

  • To give students practical/ hands on experience.

  • To help students gain experience through discussions, debates, seminar presentations in the Dept.

  • To enable students understand the different domains of medicinal and nutritional plants.

  • To place students on summer training/internships at various Research &Development laboratories, institutions, Ayurveda/ Allopathy hospitals and Bio Tech Pharma companies that they gain knowledge and experience.

  • To spread awareness on the ongoing research projects in Basic & applied Botany.

  • To shape students’ discipline and sincerity that they work hard in academic and co-curricular activities.

  • To motivate students win prizes and bring good name and fame to the department.

The study of Algae, Fungi, lichens, mosses, naming & Classification, taxonomy, function, structure, growth patterns, breeding, plant pathology, biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, floriculture, environmental science, pharmacology, biomedical engineering, ecology and many new frontiers are making the study of Botany an attractive curricular option to both faculty and students. Also this ever widening scope is promoting Plant biology multidisciplinary and highly competitive.

The Faculty is highly qualified and well experienced and strives to generate new knowledge. They actively engage the students to use the resources and work towards achieving their goals. The course curriculum offers many field experiences to students as it is seminal to the study of flora. In addition, the Department keeps pace with new developments in plant sciences to make a condusive environment for science education. Motivation, achievement and excellent results are its key strengths.

It boasts of well equipped practice laboratories, in-house Botanical Museum with numerous specimens, fossil slides, spacious Green house and Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory.
