Botany Museum

The largest hall in the Department of Botany is allotted to the Herbarium commonly called as Museum. Since inception Botany Museum is maintained and continually enriched by generations of staff members Teaching and Non Teaching.

The Department boasts of plant specimens collected from the Himalayas, cold and dry plains and the seas. Bryophytes, Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms are collected from various localities. Polytrichum from Kodai canal, Ulna from Cape Cameron (1971), Drosera from Kodai canal (1991), Drynoslossum from Trivandrum, Lycopodium from Ooty and Coonnoor (1965), Pines from Shimla (1972), and Coffee Arabica from Araku valley are a few examples. The second category includes specimens on pathology, spices and medicinal plants. Balanophora (root parasite) from Coonnoor, Podocarpus shoot with cones, Samara of Hyptage are some of the oldest specimens. A collection of Taxonomic specimens are preserved in Herbarium sheets. Along with living specimens fossil specimens are well preserved.
