Department of Geology
The Department of Geology started in the 1960s with the bachelor’s degree course, to prepare students to pursue master’s degree in Geology at Osmania University. This department was one in three colleges offering Geology in Hyderabad. The Bachelor’s degree course helped the students to opt for Masters in Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Geography.
This budding department grew to become the only private college offering this subject in the twin cities. The department is proud to have been visited by our Former Prime Minister Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri who inaugurated the Geology Museum in 1964.

In 2014 the department started the Master’s in Geology Course. The department has produced several well-known scientists, field geologists, academicians, administrators who have spread all over the world. The department boasts of rank holders who make the department proud.
The vision of the Department is to strengthen teaching, training, and research. The main thrust of the Department is in teaching the core subjects like Igneous , Metamorphic, Sedimentology, Structural Geology, Mineral Exploration, Geomorphology, Geo-tectonics, Hydrogeology, Mining, Remote Sensing, Petroleum Geology and Environmental Geology. Since Disaster Management is the need of the hour, it is one of the subjects taught at post-graduation level.
The Department is well equipped with a museum which contains large number of samples of minerals, rocks, fossils, maps and aerial photographs. For training in surveying, instruments for survey is part of the curriculum. To train the students in Remote Sensing and GIS the Officers from Geological Survey of India conduct workshops and give a hands on experience.
The Final Year students must be trained in Seminars. They are trained to prepare presentations and give a talk. Since Geology is a field subject, the students are exposed to Field training camps. The Officers of Geological Survey of India have conducted Field Training camps in Vajrakarur and Kothagudem. The students are also taken to mines and have visited the Betamcherla mines.
To inculcate research, the students are given a topic to research on. Field work is carried out and samples collected and analysed. The data generated is compiled and presented in the form of a thesis. This dissertation helps them in their future endeavours.
Guest lectures and Seminar talks are conducted periodically. Eminent researchers and teachers are invited to deliver lectures. The students are greatly benefited by these lectures which broaden their minds.
