The Dept of Microbiology offers B.Sc Microbiology as the central sciences so that students can choose a wide variety of useful, interesting and rewarding careers. It has been the most sought-after discipline in the last dacade. While it is interesting to understand the identification of different microorganisms like bacteria, virus, fungi and algae with determine our life, size and shape and feelings in the world we live, it is also important to understand the insecticides in water molecular level like protein contents in given samples and the chemicals present in moon rock all which make the study of microbiology at UG level the most specialized qualification in Applied Biology.

The objective of the Bachelor of Science in Microbiology is to provide future Microbiologist with the skills and competencies needed to design micro-biotechnological research, implement microbiological projects, and plan, decide, create and apply research modalities in large research projects in order to improve the health status and quality of life in developing countries. The effect of microorganisms on the human biology keeps one ahead with skills and self-discipline and be creative problem solver to one’s own health care, health promotion, and prevention of illness and complications as it were.

Microbiology is a multidisciplinary subject dealing with Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Phycology including Applied Cell, Applied Molecular Biology, Applied Biochemistry, Applied Microbiology, Food Technology and Biotechnology. A student of Microbiology must have an in depth knowledge of microbial genetic biology, cell biology, metabolic and homeostatic aspects and the latest techniques of microbiology.

The aim of the Department is to produce high quality under graduates with in depth knowledge of microbiology, cell biology that they use real life solutions in the field of Applied Biology and Microbiology and meet the challenges of industry including of medical sciences. With a growing demand for life saving drugs Technologies based on Microbiology are providing novel solutions to issues in health and health related areas.

Today, Microbiology is a rapidly expanding cutting-edge scientific discipline harnessing advances in Bacteriology, Virology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genomics, and Proteomics to move discoveries and ideas out of the laboratory and into the product development pipeline. Merging science with business, the industry of microbiology demands a multi-disciplinary workforce skilled in basic research, identification of new microbes, drug development, regulatory affairs and commercialization. With this foundation in science, the course is designed so that graduates can be competent enough to design Microbial research, through various Microbiological concepts, techniques and applications in large research projects.

Objectives of the Program:

The objective of UG Microbiology program is that Microbiologists are responsible for research objectives in many areas of scientific disciplines, such as genetic engineering, agriculture, pharmacology, veterinary medicine, Bacteriology, Virology and Biotechnology etc.

Department Profile:

The Department of Microbiology at Under – graduate level has been inducted in the year 1976. There was a very good response towards the course in the very first year.
The Department has well infra structure and well equipped Laboratories The students are encouraged to take up the projects during summer vacations.
The achievements of the Department have been built with commitment and hard work of the faculty under the guidance of Head of the Department of life sciences.

FACILITIES:

Laboratories: Separate Labs for B.Sc. students to conduct experiments in the field of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Immunology.
Instrumentation room: Separate room with well equipped instruments is utilized by students during their laboratory hour to perform biochemical analysis
Seminar room: a separate seminar room is provided smart boards with LCD projectors & screen to the students during seminar hours where the students give their presentation by PPT.
Library: Department library has a collection of text books and reference books of all areas of Biochemistry. Reading room facility with free access to the books is available to PG students.
Journals: e- journals available
Computer facility: computer facility is available with internet access
